Glasgow 2026 Countdown: Jacob Cassar Eyes Commonwealth Glory for Australia

With the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow fast approaching, Australia’s Jacob Cassar is preparing for the biggest challenge of his amateur boxing career after earning selection to represent Team Australia in the fiercely competitive 65kg division.

The Victorian has emerged as one of Australia’s leading talents through years of dedication and hard work. Training out of Lionsden Academy in Sunbury, Cassar has steadily built a reputation as a composed and technically accomplished boxer, qualities that have earned him the opportunity to compete on one of the sport’s biggest international stages.

Boxing success has not come without sacrifice, and Cassar is the first to acknowledge those who have helped him along the way. The son of former leading jockey Eddie Cassar, he credits both of his parents for the unwavering support and encouragement they have provided throughout his journey, helping shape the athlete who will proudly wear the green and gold in Glasgow.

For Cassar, representing Australia at the Commonwealth Games is the fulfilment of an ambition that has driven him for years.

“Competing at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games means everything to me. It has been a long-term goal and I can’t wait to wear my Australian uniform on the world stage and show all the hard work we have put in to get here.”

The 65kg weight class is expected to be among the most competitive divisions in Glasgow, featuring national champions and international medallists from across the Commonwealth. Despite the calibre of the opposition, Cassar is refusing to focus on individual names, instead placing his trust in the preparation that has earned him a place on the Australian team.

“I have a very big division full of world-class opponents. I’m not focused on one particular fighter. Every single fighter is the best in their country and I have great respect for every one of them. I’m just focusing on remaining confident in my own abilities and taking it one fight at a time. I can’t wait to get in there.”

It is an approach that reflects both his maturity and self-belief, qualities that will serve him well in a tournament where every contest presents a significant test.

Although earning Commonwealth Games selection represents a major milestone, Cassar has travelled to Glasgow with far greater ambitions than simply taking part.

“My goal is definitely to win a gold medal for my country, my team and everyone who has supported me to get here. Success to me is giving my best performance in every fight. If I do that, I believe I am good enough. But if someone is better on the day, I will obviously be devastated, but I’ll be proud to have competed at the Commonwealth Games as it’s a massive achievement in itself and I can’t wait to see what this tournament holds.”

Those words underline the mentality that has brought Cassar to this point—a competitor driven by excellence while remaining grounded enough to appreciate the magnitude of the occasion. Jacob Cassar arrives in Glasgow determined to not only challenge the very best in the Commonwealth but to come out on top.

Should he perform to the level he believes he is capable of, the Australian has every reason to believe he can leave Scotland with a place on the podium—and perhaps even the Commonwealth gold medal that has long been his ultimate objective.
