Scarlett Delgado will head into the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with valuable international experience behind her and a growing reputation as one of Canada’s leading female amateur boxers.
The Ontario-based fighter has built an impressive career at domestic and international level, becoming a multiple-time Canadian champion while consistently testing herself against elite opposition. Delgado represented Canada at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, where she reached the quarter-finals, before competing at the 2025 World Boxing Championships in Liverpool.
Her preparations for Glasgow have continued at the highest level, with Delgado gaining further international experience at the World Boxing Cup in Brazil as she continues to develop ahead of another major championship.
Delgado’s progression has been shaped by the environment at Team Destiny Boxing Club, where she trains under the guidance of former world title contender Syd Vanderpool. The Ontario-based club has developed a reputation for producing skilled and disciplined fighters, with Vanderpool’s own experience at the highest level of professional boxing providing valuable insight for athletes competing on the international stage.
At 31, Delgado brings the benefit of experience into the Commonwealth Games environment, having already competed on some of amateur boxing’s biggest stages. For her, representing Canada remains one of the biggest honours in her career.
“Representing Team Canada is something I never take for granted. Every time you put on the gloves, you’re representing far more than yourself. You’re representing your coaches, your teammates, your family, and everyone who believed in you long before anyone else did.”
The road to international competition requires years of commitment, and Delgado highlighted the sacrifices behind reaching this level of the sport.
“For me, it’s the result of years of sacrifices that most people never see. The early mornings, the setbacks, the injuries, the losses and the lessons that come with them. Those moments shape you far more than the victories.”
While proud of wearing the Canadian vest, Delgado also understands the responsibility that comes with representing her country.
“I’m incredibly proud to wear the Maple Leaf, but I also see it as a responsibility. When I step into the ring, my focus isn’t on proving who I am. It’s on performing to the best of my ability and representing Canada with professionalism, discipline and respect.”
Commonwealth Competition Awaits
The Glasgow 2026 tournament is expected to feature some of the strongest female boxing talent from across the Commonwealth, with every division providing a significant challenge.
Delgado is not focusing on any single opponent, instead maintaining her attention on preparation and execution.
“The Commonwealth has some outstanding athletes, and that’s exactly what makes this tournament exciting. Rather than focusing on one particular opponent, I have a great deal of respect for everyone who’s earned their place there.”
The Canadian believes success at this level comes down to consistency, discipline and making sure she performs to the best of her ability when it matters most.
“At this level, every boxer is dangerous, and overlooking anyone would be a mistake. Ultimately, my biggest challenge is always becoming the best version of myself.”
“If I’m disciplined in my preparation, execute the game plan my coaches and I have developed, and stay present in each round, then I’m confident I can compete with anyone in the division.”
Building Towards Glasgow
The Commonwealth Games represent another important milestone in Delgado’s international career, offering the opportunity to compete against some of the leading boxers from across the Commonwealth.
Having already experienced the atmosphere of major championships, she understands the importance of embracing the occasion while maintaining focus on performance.
“I’m looking forward to testing myself against some of the best athletes in the Commonwealth. Events like this bring together incredible talent and create an atmosphere that’s difficult to replicate anywhere else.”
Delgado also highlighted the importance of sharing the experience with her fellow Canadian athletes.
“I’m also excited to share that experience with Team Canada. There’s something special about competing alongside athletes who have all dedicated themselves to representing their country.”
The Influence of Katie Taylor
The growth of women’s boxing over recent years has been closely linked to the achievements of fighters such as Katie Taylor, whose success has helped inspire a new generation of boxers worldwide.
With Taylor preparing for her final fight in Dublin on September 5, Delgado reflected on the impact the Irish champion has had on the sport.
“Absolutely. She is by far my favourite female boxer.”

“What I admire most is how she carries herself. She lets her performances speak louder than words, and she’s remained humble throughout an extraordinary career. That’s a quality I have a lot of respect for, and something I try to emulate in my own journey.”
