Josh Olaniyan Continues to Build Momentum as Ireland’s Leading Light Heavyweight

There is a growing feeling that Josh Olaniyan is only scratching the surface of what he can achieve in amateur boxing.

Already a two-time Irish Elite champion, the Dublin fighter has firmly established himself as Ireland’s number one light heavyweight, and after an impressive 2026 campaign, he is emerging as one of the country’s brightest amateur prospects.

Olaniyan made a huge statement back in January when he claimed his second Irish Elite title – his first since moving up to light heavyweight. In doing so, he defeated one of the tournament favourites, Kelyn Cassidy, in a final that underlined his quality and announced him as the man to beat in the division.

Reflecting on the year so far, Olaniyan admits lifting the Elite title was a special moment.

“Looking back on 2026 so far it’s been an amazing blessing from God.”

“Starting off strong by winning my second Elite title and my first year at the higher weight class. The feeling I got in the last round when the 10-second clapper went off, knowing I was two rounds up on the scorecards, was something I can’t describe. That one meant a lot.”

“I felt like that was my opportunity to put my name on the map, coming against two of the best lads in the country. It was the perfect opportunity to show what I believe I’m capable of.”

Rather than resting on that success, Olaniyan has continued to test himself against elite international opposition.

Appearances at the prestigious Strandja Cup and the World Cup in China have provided invaluable experience while also reinforcing his belief that he belongs among the top fighters in the division.

One of the highlights of his year came at the Strandja Cup, where he produced a statement performance by stopping England’s number one, Dimeji Shittu inside the opening round. It was the type of victory that caught the attention of those following the international amateur scene.

That performance, along with strong displays against other top-level opponents throughout the year, has only strengthened his confidence.

“A lot of valuable experience has been gained this year from both international sparring camps and competitions.”

“I got a real chance to have a look at the world standard first hand and share the ring with some of the best in the world. I’ve gained a lot of confidence by proving to myself the level I’m at, beating the Olympian from Azerbaijan and the world No. 7 at the time by KO in round one.”

“I know all the hard work will pay off soon.”

With the European Championships in Bulgaria on the horizon this September, there is plenty to look forward to, but Olaniyan’s attention is fixed firmly on the next task.

The reigning Elite champion is determined to add the Irish Under-23 title to his growing list of honours before turning his focus to whatever opportunities follow.

“I have my eyes set now on the upcoming U23s. The camp is going well. At the moment I’m just taking it one step at a time, but I’m feeling at my best, so by God’s grace I’ll get the result I want and continue on from there.”

That measured mindset has become one of Olaniyan’s strengths. While many are already looking ahead to the major international tournaments, he remains focused on the process rather than getting carried away by the bigger picture.

Away from his own career, the Olaniyan family has enjoyed a remarkable year, with younger brother Adam becoming one of the most talked-about names in Irish professional boxing. The heavyweight prospect continues to generate huge excitement, at home and abroad.

Josh says watching his brother’s rise has been a source of immense pride.

“Yeah, of course I’m really proud of my brother and what he’s doing in the sport. He’s making history.”

“It really has been a great couple of months for the family. God is great. I’m really looking forward to what He has in store for us in the near future.”

While Adam’s exploits have grabbed the headlines in the professional ranks, Josh is quietly building an impressive career of his own.

Still early in his senior international career, he has already shown he can compete with—and beat—world-class opposition. Two Irish Elite titles, valuable international experience and impressive victories over elite opponents suggest he has all the ingredients to become one of Ireland’s leading amateur boxers for years to come.

The immediate focus remains on the Irish Under-23 Championships, with the European Championships potentially to follow. If his development continues on its current trajectory, Josh Olaniyan looks set to become a major force on the international amateur scene and with LA ‘28 now in sight, Ireland could be looking at their next Olympic star.
